My Senior Doesn’t Want to Talk About College at All
My Senior Doesn’t Want to Talk About College at All
Every time college comes up, your senior shuts down. They change the subject, disengage, and you’re unsure how to move forward.
CHECK FIRST
Pause and ask:
Does college feel overwhelming or threatening to them?
Have they been asked this question repeatedly?
Are they protecting themselves emotionally?
What happens when the topic is removed?
Silence can be communication.
THEN
Choose a response that maintains trust.
Option 1: Pause college conversations temporarily
Space can reduce resistance.
Option 2: Shift to listening instead of planning
Connection matters more than answers.
Option 3: Reassure without questioning
Let them know there’s no rush.
PAUSE
Conversations often return when safety is felt. You’re allowed to pause here.
NOTES / REFLECTION
If it helps, reflect on:
How does my senior respond when pressure is removed?
What might they need more of right now?
How can I stay present without pushing?
