My Senior Doesn’t Seem Motivated About College
Your senior seems disengaged or unmotivated when college comes up. You might wonder if they don’t care—or if something else is happening underneath.
CHECK FIRST
Before assuming the reason, pause and ask:
Is my senior overwhelmed rather than unmotivated?
Have they felt pressure from others?
Are they avoiding decisions—or the emotions around them?
What happens when the pressure is removed?
Avoidance doesn’t always mean apathy.
THEN
Choose a response that preserves connection.
Option 1: Shift the focus from outcomes to feelings
“How does this feel?” can be safer than “What are you doing?”
Option 2: Take a break from the topic
Distance can sometimes restore openness.
Option 3: Normalize uncertainty
Letting them know it’s okay not to know can reduce resistance.
PAUSE
Motivation often returns when pressure lifts. You’re allowed to pause here.
NOTES / REFLECTION
If it helps, reflect on:
What might my senior be protecting themselves from?
Where might I be interpreting silence as lack of care?
How can I keep trust central right now?
