I’m worried my student will regret their choice
IF I’m Worried My Student Will Regret Their Choice
IF
You’re worried that the path your student chooses may lead to regret.
You imagine future disappointment.
You fear irreversible mistakes.
And you want to protect them.
CHECK FIRST
Pause and consider:
-
Am I projecting my fears—or responding to real risk?
-
Has my student thought through this choice?
-
What experiences help people learn—even if plans change?
-
Is regret always harmful—or sometimes instructive?
Growth rarely follows a straight line.
THEN
Choose a response rooted in trust.
Option 1: Focus on learning, not permanence
Few decisions are final in the way they feel.
Option 2: Trust adaptability
Your student’s ability to adjust matters more than their first choice.
Option 3: Stay available
Support matters more than steering.
PAUSE
Regret is not the same as failure.
You’re allowed to pause here.
NOTES / REFLECTION
-
What am I afraid regret would mean?
-
How have I learned through past choices?
-
What kind of support matters most now?
